DREAMer of the Week!

This week's DREAMer of the week is President Barack Obama.  In an interview with Los Angeles radio station La Nueva 101.9 FM, the president said, "I'm a big supporter of the DREAM Act," reiterating a sentiment he has expressed before.  If you'd like to thank the president for his support, you can call 202-456-1414.

President Obama joins a long line of leaders in Congress and in the education, business, faith-based, and immigrants' rights communities standing firmly to pass the DREAM Act.

Gains

  • Fabiola, a "dreamer" with IDEAS at UCLA, attended a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden last week and asked for the administration's support of the DREAM Act.  You can read her account of the meeting here.

  • An article in "The Hill" explores the DREAM Act as a first step toward immigration reform.

  • Students from local universities and colleges in Orange, CA, held a rally at Santiago Canyon College in support of the DREAM Act.  Details on the rally are available here.

  • An article in the "Boston Globe" highlighted Harvard President Drew Faust's endorsement of the DREAM Act last week.

We met our weekly goal of getting an additional 5 cosponsors for the DREAM Act in the House of Representatives, for a total to date of 65!

DREAMer of the Week!

This week's DREAMer of the week is Harvard University president Drew Faust.  In a letter to Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), President Faust declared her strong support for the DREAM Act and thanked the senator for his "efforts on behalf of this vitally important legislation."  Congratulations to Kyle de Beausset and the other students at Harvard for their tireless efforts in getting President Faust's support!

Gains

In an article on OrlandoSentinel.com, "Immigrants' Children Might Get Help from DREAM Act," Victor Manuel Ramos details the plight of Walter Lara, a 23 year old undocumented youth facing deportation.

An op-ed article for DallasNews.com written by René Villareal, an English teacher at Jesuit College Preparatory School in Dallas, explores the hostility sometimes faced by undocumented children.

DREAMer of the Week!

This week's DREAMers of the week are the New York State members of the United We Dream (UWD) coalition.  Their efforts have helped bring on 12 cosponsors from the New York State congressional delegation.  We now have the support of both senators, nine representatives, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.  We are grateful for your hard work and commitment to the passage of the DREAM Act!

New Cosponsors

Once again we surpassed our goal of getting an additional five cosponsors for the DREAM Act in the House of Representatives.  We have picked up eight additional cosponsors in the House in the last week!

DREAMer of the Week!

This week's DREAMer of the week is Secretary for Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, who today endorsed the DREAM Act during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.  NILC's press release can be found here.  An excerpt from the hearing transcripts can be found here.  The video is available here.

Gains

In an article by Megan Eckstein in the Chronicle of Higher Education entitled "In-State Tuition for Undocumented Students: Not Quite Yet," DREAM activists make a compelling case for why the DREAM Act should be passed this year and forcefully counter the points made by the bill's detractors.
