INS PRODUCES LESSON PLAN ON HMONG VETERANS' NATURALIZATION ACT
Immigrants' Rights Update, Vol. 14, No. 6, October 19, 2000

The Milwaukee Sub-Office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service has released a lesson plan on implementation of the Hmong Veterans' Naturalization Act, which was enacted on May 26, 2000.  The act exempts eligible naturalization applicants from the English language requirement and provides that they be given special consideration in meeting the civics requirement for naturalization (see "President Signs Bill Easing Naturalization Requirements for Hmong Veterans," Immigrants' Rights Update, July 26, 2000, p. 5).

The act applies to refugees from Laos who served in special guerrilla units or irregular forces during the Vietnam War.  In order to take advantage of the act, individuals must apply for naturalization by Nov. 26, 2001.  The lesson plan is intended to help community representatives or case workers understand the act, and a copy of the plan may be obtained from NILC.
